District college football roundup: Seton Hill scores last-play touchdown to beat Bloomsburg
Todd Phillips caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Jake Cruz on a fourth-and-4 play with nine seconds left to lead Seton Hill to a 15-14 comeback victory over Bloomsburg in a PSAC crossover game Saturday afternoon.
Phillips’ touchdown capped a 15-play, 62-yard drive for the Griffins (1-2). Ky’Ron Craggette ran 27 times for 110 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown with 10:21 to go. Cruz went 17 for 30 for 201 yards.
Jake Williams ran 14 times for 141 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown that gave Bloomsburg (1-1) a 14-3 lead in the final minute of the third quarter.
Cal (Pa.) 38, West Chester 28 – Davis Black threw for 248 yards and a touchdown and ran for 73 yards and three scores to lead Cal (Pa.) (1-1) to victory over West Chester (0-2). Eric Willis III caught three passes for 109 yards and a touchdown for the Vulcans while teammate Bobby Boyd Jr. added 95 rushing yards. Cooper Jordan threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns for West Chester.
IUP 20, Lock Haven 17 – Karst Hunter went 8 for 14 for 105 yards, including touchdown passes of 5 yards to Cyair Clark and 14 yards to Maurice Massey, to lead IUP (2-0) to a PSAC crossover victory. Jackson Ostrowsky threw for 284 yards and two touchdowns for Lock Haven (1-1).
Kutztown 26, Edinboro 0 – Brandon Hile had six tackles, 1 1/2 sacks and an interception as Kutztown (2-0) shut out Edinboro (1-1). Kutztown’s defense held Edinboro to 149 yards of offense. Judd Noval tossed for 124 yards and one touchdown. Teggan Brown had 11 receptions for 59 yards for Edinboro.
Shippensburg 24, Clarion 21 – Sam Stoner threw for 149 yards and two third-quarter touchdown passes and Wilson Ingerski made a 25-yard field goal with 4:50 left as Shippensburg (1-1) rallied from a 21-7 second-half deficit to win a PSAC crossover game. Tanner Hess returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a score for Shippensburg. Anthony Guercio was 24 for 34 for 334 yards and a touchdown and ran 14 times for 98 yards and two scores for Clarion (2-1).
Slippery Rock 20, Shepherd 10 – Brayden Long threw completed 17 of 21 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown as No. 10 Slippery Rock (2-0) beat Shepherd (1-1). Slippery Rock’s defense limited Shepherd to 26 rushing yards. Lek Powell threw for 240 yards and a touchdown for Shepherd.
Division III
Carnegie Mellon 41, Geneva 7 – Ben Mills hit Dominic Voiland with two fourth-quarter touchdown passes as No. 20 Carnegie Mellon (2-0) pulled away with the win against Geneva (0-2). The Tartans led 14-7 heading into the final quarter before scoring 27 points. Mills threw for 220 yards while Voiland caught six passes for 83 yards. Carnegie Mellon outgained Geneva 368-139.
Saint Vincent 41, Allegheny 20 – Billy Beck and Dontae Sanders each ran for 95 yards and a touchdown as Saint Vincent (1-1, 1-1) beat Allegheny (1-1, 1-1) in a PAC contest. Israel Reed threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns for Saint Vincent while defensively, Robbie Labuda had two interceptions, returning one for a 40-yard touchdown. Austin Williams caught 11 passes for 62 yards for Allegheny.
Washington & Jefferson 58, Thiel 7 – Jacob Pugh threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns to lead Washington & Jefferson (2-0) to a PAC win over Thiel (0-2). Thirteen players caught passes for W&J, which outgained Thiel 516-74. Kobe DeRosa ran for 51 yards and two touchdowns.
Westminster 23, Waynesburg 10 – Ty McGowan completed 17 of 19 passes for 213 yards and a 37-yard touchdown to Taite Beachy as Westminster (1-0, 1-0) opened its season by defeating Waynesburg (0-2, 0-2) in PAC play. Beachy caught six passes for 85 yards. Zayne Cawley paced Waynesburg’s offense with 129 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Division I FCS
Central Connecticut 27, St. Francis (Pa.) – Kimal Clark scooped up a fumble and returned it 18 yards with 1:45 remaining to lift Central Connecticut over St. Francis (Pa.) in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams.
In a game of big plays, Clark turned in the final one after Adrian Mejia stripped the ball from DeMarcus McElroy.
The Red Flash (1-2, 0-1), which scored its first victory over an FBS last week against Kent State, tied the game at 20 after Fran Brown Jr. recovered a fumble in the end zone when Central Connecticut botched a handoff late in the third quarter.
The Blue Devils (2-1, 1-0) took a 20-14 lead with 25 seconds left in the first half on Brady Olson’s 11-yard touchdown toss to Michael Plaskon.
After two Jack Barnum field goals gave CCSU the early lead, DaMario Crawford returned a kickoff 94 yards for St. Francis in the first quarter.
Olson ran 7 yards for a 13-7 CCSU lead in the second quarter. St. Francis went back on top on McElroy’s 97-yard run, the longest rushing play for the program since 2021.
The game also featured Aidan Clark’s CCSU-record 84-yard punt when the Red Flash’s Aaron Tutino picked it up on the 1 and was tackled at the 3.
Olson was 21-of-42 passing for 163 yards. Elijah Howard rushed 23 times for 102 yards.
McElroy rushed for 124 yards on nine carries.
