Down 14-0 after the first quarter, the Saint Vincent football team rallied and won a back-and-forth thriller at Chuck Noll Field on Saturday, 42-40, against Case Western Reserve.
Junior Brady Walker threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns, freshman Billy Beck rushed for 93 yards and two scores and sophomore Molayo Irefin caught eight receptions for 85 yards in the win, which moved SVC to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the PAC.
A trio of freshmen led the defense.
Joanes Polynice had a team-high 12 tackles, Jaden Pratt had 11 and Marvelle Cromerdie added 10.
Polynice and Pratt each had an interception, as did another freshman, Cody Savage-Hicks.
SVC went ahead for good on a 48-yard touchdown run by Beck with 1 minute, 58 seconds to play in the fourth.
Beck, who has six touchdowns this season, was named the Presidents Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week.
Allegheny: Sophomore running back Kyrie Miller (Ligonier Valley) ran for 40 yards and a touchdown, but the Gators (1-4) fell to Kenyon, 27-13.
Duquesne: Freshman receiver Nick Leopold (Franklin Regional) caught two passes for 38 yards in the Dukes’ 56-7 win over Lynchburg. Leopold initially said he was done playing sports when he came to Duquesne to study nursing, but he had a change of heart. He has played in three games this season.
Freshman defensive back Ben LaCarte (Greensburg Central Catholic) has played in one game for the Dukes (2-1).
East Carolina: Redshirt freshman Trent Holler (Latrobe) played in Saturday’s 52-29 win over Tulane and helped the Pirates rush for 310 yards and four touchdowns.
Grove City: Sophomore cornerback Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) had two pass breakups and three tackles as the Wolverines took care of Waynesburg, 38-0, to move to 3-1.
St. Francis (Pa.): Redshirt sophomore Justin Sliwoski (Hempfield) completed 13 of 20 passes for a career-high 166 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-14 victory over Morgan State.
Towson: Redshirt junior Bryce Lauer (Franklin Regional) has played in all four games and has 11 tackles and a forced fumble.
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore linebacker Justin Johns (Franklin Regional) had eight tackles and an interception as the Presidents moved to 5-0 with a 24-20 win against Geneva.
Men’s golf
Notre Dame: Junior Palmer Jackson (Franklin Regional) signed for rounds of 68, 68 and 71 to tie for third at the Windon Memorial, hosted by Northwestern at the Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe, Ill.
Jackson finished with a 54-hole total of 6-under-par 207.
The Fighting Irish also finished third in the team standings.
Men’s cross country
Cal (Pa.): Junior Mason Jobe (Greensburg Salem) finished 36th in a time of 27 minutes, 10.5 seconds as the White 8K race of the Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh.
Grove City: Freshman Joe Whipkey (Penn-Trafford) finished 11th at the Grove City Invitational with a time of 18:38.27.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats placed eighth out of 20 teams at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh as sophomore John Hurley finished 10th individually in a time of 26:19.
Women’s cross country
Cal (Pa.): Freshman Malia Anderson (Greensburg Salem) took 43rd in her first collegiate race, finishing in a time of 23:59.4 at the White 6K race at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh.
Carlow: Senior Olivia Miller (Ligonier Valley) was named Carlow’s Outstanding Senior Athlete as part of the university’s 2020-21 Celtic Awards.
Miller will have her name engraved in the school’s Walk of Fame next to the St. Joseph Athletic & Fitness Center on campus.
Also a track and field standout, Miller was the River States Conference Female Athlete of the Year.
