Looks like the Los Angeles Chargers are the ones that got Rickrolled.

During Sunday night’s Steelers-Chargers game at Dignity Health Sports Park, the crew in charge of the stadium music and video tried to get funny with the Black and Gold fans in attendance. With a little more than seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the opening of the Styx song “Renegade” started to blare across the stadium.

The crowd, which was overwhelmingly made up of Steelers fans, went wild. A few notes in, Rick Astley’s song “Never Gonna Give You Up” kicked in, but it was too late as the fans continued to cheer.

The timing was also suspect. The Chargers had just scored a touchdown but were still down 21-10. So the Steelers were getting the ball back. “Renegade” is played at Heinz Field to get the hometown defense fired up for a big stop.

The Steelers went on to win 24-17.

Some Chargers players weren’t happy with the song being played in the stadium.

“It was crazy,” running back Melvin Gordon said, according to the Los Angeles Times. “They started playing their theme music. I don’t know what we were doing — that little soundtrack, what they do on their home games. I don’t know why we played that.

“I don’t know what that was. Don’t do that at our own stadium. … It already felt like it was their stadium. … I don’t understand that.”

Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said the stadium noise wasn’t why his team lost.

“The crowd doesn’t play,” Lynn said, according to the Times. “If anything, I thought that crowd tonight brought a lot of energy to the stadium. It was an exciting night to play football. We just didn’t execute the way we should have.”

The 27,000-seat stadium is a temporary home for the Chargers while their Los Angeles-area home, which they will share with the Los Angeles Rams, is being completed in time for next season. The L.A. Galaxy of Major League Soccer are the stadium’s main tenants.
