2019 Tribune-Review player of the year Justin Huss of Derry

Justin Huss is pulling double duty this spring at Washington & Jefferson.

The former Derry football and track standout said he wanted to play two sports in college, and he is living up to his goal.

Huss had a couple of carries in a football game last Thursday night, then ran to a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter dash Saturday at the Geneva Classic track and field meet.

The freshman has 48 yards on seven carries for the Presidents (2-0), a 20-6 winner Thursday.

Baseball

Kansas State: Junior Zach Kokoska (Latrobe) blasted his team-leading 10th home run of the season, but it was one of only two hits for the Wildcats in a 17-1 loss to Texas Tech.

Saint Vincent: Freshman Julian Santana went 3 for 5 and drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a single in the ninth inning as the Bearcats outlasted Franciscan, 16-14, in a wild PAC game.

The Bearcats (7-7) scored five times in the top of the ninth. Senior Matt Evans not only homered and scored three runs, but he also picked up the pitching win with two innings of relief. Junior Zach Barberich had a double and three RBIs.

Westmoreland County C.C.: Sophomore Tommy Kegerreis (Franklin Regional) set a school record by going 6 for 6 in a 19-8 win over Kent State Tuscarawas in the second game of a Wolfpack sweep. Kegerreis had four singles, a double and a three-run home run. In the two games, he finished 8 for 10 with two doubles and five RBIs.

Teammate Matt Wicker (Greensburg Salem), another sophomore, went 6 for 7 with three doubles and five RBIs combined.

Football

Washington & Jefferson: Former high school teammates played key roles for the Presidents’ linebacking corps in a 22-6 victory over Geneva. Freshman Justin Johns (Franklin Regional) and sophomore Adam Rudzinski (Franklin Regional) combined for 12 tackles in the victory as W&J improved to 2-0. Johns had seven stops.

Men’s volleyball

Penn State: Sophomore John Kerr (Derry) has appeared in nine matches (18 sets) for the Nittany Lions (17-2). The 6-foot-6 outside hitter has 11 kills and six blocks.

St. Francis (Pa.): Freshman outside hitter Joey Ferragonio (Norwin) has contributed to four matches, including two starts, for the Red Flash (5-17). He has 10 kills, nine digs and three assists on the season.

Men’s basketball

Allegheny: Junior guard Josh Ratesic (Norwin) had 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in an 83-74 victory over Penn State Behrend. Both totals are career highs.

Women’s soccer

Robert Morris: Senior Brittany O’Connell (Norwin) has started all eight games this season for the Colonials (1-7). She has one goal on six shots, two on-goal. For her career, the midfielder has five goals and four assists in 56 games.

Rutgers: Redshirt sophomore Emily Harrigan (Norwin) is working her way back after some hamstring issues stalled her college career. The forward has played in five games this season. She has one goal and one assist in her career with both coming in 2019.

Men’s golf

Grove City: Senior Zack Spang (Hempfield) earned seventh-place finish with a 7-over-par 79 at the Westminster Spring Invitational.

Washington & Jefferson: Senior Ben Peticca (Franklin Regional) posted a team-best score of 6-over-par 78 and tied for fourth place at the Westminster Spring Invitational. The Presidents finished third overall.
