In 41 games this past regular season, Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin had 14 points (four goals, 10 assists).

Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin and goaltender Casey DeSmith were absent from practice in Cranberry on Monday.

Coach Mike Sullivan indicated Dumoulin’s absence was a “maintenance day.”

Dumoulin appeared to be laboring in the late stages of Sunday’s 4-3 overtime home loss to the New York Islanders after being struck on his right foot by a shot from Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulock at approximately 6:40 of the third period.

DeSmith has missed the past four games, including the final three contests of the regular season, due to an undisclosed injury. Sullivan said DeSmith remains sidelined on a “day-to-day” basis.

Forward Evgeni Malkin participated in practice after missing Game 1 due to presumed right knee injury. While Malkin was present, he did not take part in line rushes or power-play drills. While the formal practice session lasted approximately 25 minutes, Malkin — typically is one of the first players to leave the ice following practice under normal circumstances — remained on the ice for upwards of 45 minutes following the conclusion of practice.

He missed 23 games toward the end of the regular season due to his right knee ailment.

Sullivan described Malkin as “day to day” and a “game-time decision” for Game 2 on Tuesday at PPG Paints Arena.
