The St. Louis Blues have hired Mike Weber, a native of Cranberry, as an assistant coach.
His appointment was announced by the team on Wednesday.
A product of the former Pittsburgh Junior Penguins program, Weber, 35, spent parts of eight seasons in the NHL as a physical left-handed defenseman with the Buffalo Sabres and Washington Capitals.
In 351 career NHL games, Weber had 53 points (nine goals, 44 assists) and 437 penalty minutes.
Drafted in the second round (No. 57 overall) by the Sabres in the 2006 NHL Draft, Weber retired after playing for Frolunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League during the 2017-18 season.
For the past three seasons, he has been assistant coach with the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. Before that, he spent three seasons as an assistant coach at the junior level with the Ontario Hockey League’s Windsor Spitfires.
Weber will be one of the relatively few natives of Western Pennsylvania to work on the coaching staff of an NHL club.
