Big names left, although Steelers may have to wait to get one

Although the Pittsburgh Steelers traded away their second-round pick Thursday night, they have the next-best thing when the second day of the NFL Draft is held Friday.

The Steelers still hold the second pick of the third round, which they obtained in the Antonio Brown trade, and they also have the 20^th pick in the third, which is the No. 83 overall selection.

Now that the first round is in the books, there could be plenty of options available Friday for the Steelers to address other positional needs, be it by standing pat or trying to trade up into the second round.

The Steelers have eight draft picks left, including three sixth-round selections.

Deandre Baker was the only cornerback selected in the first round, which surely came as a surprise to LSU’s Greedy Williams and Washington’s Byron Murphy – a pair of corners that were mocked to the Steelers in the first round by some analysts.

Another player heavily associated with the Steelers – Temple corner Rock Ya-Sin – also remains on the board as does Kentucky corner Lonnie Johnson Jr.

A trio of talented safeties also made it out of the first round: Washington’s Taylor Rapp, Virginia’s Juan Thornhill and Delaware’s Nassir Adderly.

One of the surprises of the first round was that neither of the Mississippi wide receivers – D.K. Metcalf and A.J. Brown – was picked. They join a group of pass catchers that should go in the second round, a list that includes Ohio State’s Parris Campbell, South Carolina’s Deebo Samuel, Stanford’s J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and Iowa State’s Hakeem Butler.

The Steelers brought a bunch of running backs into UPMC Rooney Sports Complex for predraft visits, and only one back went in the first round: Alabama’s Josh Jacobs. Still on the board are Iowa State’s David Montgomery, Penn State’s Miles Sanders and Alabama’s Damien Harris.

If it’s a pass rusher the Steelers covet, they could find Michigan’s Chase Winovich, a Thomas Jefferson graduate, available in the third round. Penn State’s Shareef Miller is another possibility.
