Andrew Luck’s sudden retirement from the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday night will deny fans the chance to watch him play against the Steelers this season. The Colts are scheduled to visit Heinz Field on Nov. 3.

The game would have been just the second start for Luck against the Steelers, an indication of the lengthy injury history that contributed to his walking away from the game at age 29.

The past three times the teams met, the Colts started Matt Hasselbeck (2015), Scott Tolzien (2016) and Jacoby Brissett (2017) at quarterback. Charlie Whitehurst also saw action in the 2015 meeting.

Luck’s only start against the Steelers was a memorable one. In an October 2014 matchup at Heinz Field, Luck got into a high-scoring duel with Ben Roethlisberger.

Luck completed 26 of 45 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions. Roethlisberger, however, threw for a career-high 522 yards in the Steelers’ 51-34 victory. Roethlisberger threw six touchdowns and wasn’t intercepted while completing 40 of 49 attempts.

Luck’s last touchdown pass in that game, coincidentally, was thrown to current Steelers wide receiver Donte Moncrief, a 31-yard score in the third quarter that cut the Steelers’ lead to 42-34.

Luck was hurt earlier in the game by an interception that William Gay returned 33 yards for a touchdown to provide the Steelers with a 21-3 lead.
