After short stay in minors, Chase Rowe returns to La Roche baseball

Chase Rowe delivers his lineup card to the home plate umpire before La Roche College’s NCAA Division III Mideast Regional game against Ithaca on May 17, 2018, at Adrian, Mich. The Redhawks won that game, one of 370 victories for Rowe in his 13 years as La Roche head coach.

It’s as if Chase Rowe never left.

Rowe, who resigned as the baseball coach at La Roche last year to take a job in the minor leagues, has returned to lead the Redhawks once again.

A Knoch and Slippery Rock graduate, Rowe had been the hitting coach for the Norwich Sea Unicorns, the Class A Short Season affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.

There was no minor league season thanks to the coronavirus, so Rowe looked at his options to stay involved in the game.

The man who helped put La Roche baseball on the map knew where to turn.

“The opportunity to check the box and become a professional baseball coach is an opportunity that I am extremely grateful for and will cherish forever,” Rowe said. “La Roche University is home to me and my family. We are excited to get back to work and to continue the great tradition that our coaching staff and players worked so hard to build.”

La Roche’s 2020 baseball season was cut short after eight games over covid-19 concerns.

Leaving his dream job was no easy decision, Rowe said.

Rowe coached La Roche for 13 seasons (2007-19) and put together a record of 370-195-1 with eight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference regular-season titles and seven conference tournament championships. In 2016, the Redhawks were regional champions and played in the Division III College World Series.

Rowe is a seven-time AMCC Coach of the Year and was tabbed ABCA/Diamond Mideast Region Coach of the Year and D3baseball.com Mideast Region Coach of the Year in 2015 and ‘16.
