Classic Pirates games — ’60 World Series Game 7, ’13 Wild Card — set to air
One is one of the most iconic games in baseball history. Another is the biggest win over the past quarter-century for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Each will be available for viewing in the coming days as AT&T SportsNet seeks out new ways to keep baseball fans engaged.
The Pirates’ rightsholder announced Monday that among the Pirates classic content it will be broadcasting over the next two weeks are Game 7 of the 1960 World Series and the 2013 National League wild card game.
Like myriad other sports-centric broadcasters, AT&T SportsNet is turning to old games to fill the void while the sports world is shut down over fears related to coronavirus.
The later will air at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The former will air a week later at 7 p.m. March 31 — originally scheduled for a Pirates-at-Cubs live game.
As Pirates fans are well aware, the 1960 World Series ended on a “walk-off,” ninth-inning home run by Bill Mazeroski at Forbes Field to beat the New York Yankees. Most of the broadcast had been lost for decades until a copy was discovered by the estate of actor Bing Crobsy in 2010.
MLB Network made an entire special showing of the game with modern commentary.
The 2013 NL wild-card game remains the only postseason round the Pirates have won since the 1979 World Series. It is most remembered for chants of “Cue-to, Cue-to” by the sold-out PNC Park crowd directed at Cincinnati Reds starter Johnny Cueto. Cueto dropped the ball amidst the chants while pitching to Russell Martin.
After picking it up, Martin homered off of Cueto, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead en route to a 6-2 victory in their first postseason game in 21 years.
Other classic Pirates games to be broadcast include the 2011 season opener and the 2014 home opener. Pittsburgh-area native Neil Walker provided the only run in the March 31, 2014 game — leading off the 10th inning with a home run.
Walker and Andrew McCutchen also homered during the April 1, 2011, victory at Chicago’s Wrigley Field against the Cubs.
AT&T SportsNet also is broadcasting plenty of Penguins’ classic content during the NHL’s “pause” because of the coronavirus.
