Reunion recap
July 20 marked the 13th Millvale High School Grand Reunion at Croatian Center. Held every two years since 1998 (with the exception of 2020 due to the pandemic), the event welcomes all alumni, attendees and friends of Millvale High School for a day filled with a catered dinner, refreshments, all-day disc jockey for listening and dancing, a 50/50 raffle, gift baskets, a lottery ticket frame raffle — and much reminiscing about school years and classmates and the Borough of Millvale. There were 250 in attendance, with attendees coming from Florida, Texas and Illinois as well as locally.
Millvale High School closed in 1971 when it, Etna Borough Schools, Reserve Township Schools (their high school students attended Millvale High School), and Shaler Township School District merged to form Shaler Area School District. From 1927 to 1971, there were more than 2,700 graduates. The smallest class was in 1927 with 12 students; the largest was in 1941 with 101 students. A complete set of Millvale High School’s yearbook, The Millvalean, can be found at the Millvale Community Library.
The oldest alumna attending was Lillian Imhof Smeresky, class of 1948. Also attending was former teacher and high school principal Dr. James Kermes. The Grand Reunion Committee has been co-chaired by Joanne Herbe Majors (class of 1957) and Ralph Schranghamer (class of 1966) for a decade, and its members include alumni from the class of 1949 to the class of 1971.
The next Grand Reunion is scheduled for July 18, 2026. If you would like to be added to the mailing list or for more information, call Karen Ulrich 412-821-4571 and leave a message.
Greybrooke Garden Club
Greybrooke Garden Club will host a fall Hardy Mum Sale on Sept. 7 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at McCandless Crossing in the grassy area near BJ’s Restaurant and Bonefish Grill. Proceeds from the fundraiser help support the club’s annual donations to conservancy groups and worthy community organizations.
The club will also host an evening meeting on Sept. 11 and guests are welcome! Join us at the Latodami Nature Center in North Park at 6 p.m., when a program on owls will be presented by a Latodami Naturalist. We will learn how, as the sun sets, Pennsylvania’s most silent hunters arise and hunt in darkness. The Center is located at 575 Brown Road in Pine Township. The business meeting and light refreshments will follow the program. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Karen at 412-366-2096 by Sept. 4.
