Letter to the editor: Zelenak the right choice for seniors

Tribune-Review

Rather than address political parties, this letter examines data regarding issues impacting senior citizens.

Currently, Leslie Rossi represents District 59; Margie Zelenak offers a choice for that representation.

Upon reviewing House bills addressing seniors, I tracked Rossi’s voting record. House Bill 2400 proposed establishing the Office of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders. Rossi voted “no.” House Bill 2064 focused on protecting seniors from financial exploitation. Rossi voted “no.” House Bill 78 provided a framework to ease repayment of medical debt. Rossi voted “no.” House Bill 1853 offered a process to expedite communication between the Department of Health and Nursing Homes. Rossi voted “no.”

Rossi’s voting record evidences indifference toward supporting a large segment of her constituency. As of 2020, seniors comprised 24% of Westmoreland County’s population; by 2030, projections place one-third of Pennsylvania’s population to be over 60.

In assessing Rossi’s challenger, Zelenak, a stark contrast emerges. Zelenak serves on the Governor’s Long Term Care Council and has received national and state awards as an advocate for seniors. Obviously, Zelenak promises to be an exceptional representative to address senior needs and concerns.
