Letter to the editor: What to do with D.C.
Combining the congressional and George Will proposals (“The D.C. statehood pretense,” April 22), the U.S. should give most of Washington, D.C., “back” to Maryland.
The new D.C. should just be the area currently bounded by the Potomac and Anacostia rivers, Third Street East and I Street to the north. Maryland would then decide whether the “returned” land would be a new county, or counties, and/or just additions to the two current counties adjacent to D.C.
Any remaining residents of the new, smaller D.C. would then vote with Maryland residents for the adjacent Maryland U.S. congressional seat, the Maryland U.S. senators and the president. Just like U.S. Indian reservation residents vote in federal elections in their respective states.
All of the above would require a constitutional amendment.
Hope they get it right.
