Letter to the editor: We're all in need, not just the needy

I’d like to make an observation that seems to go unnoticed in this time of disaster. It is interesting to me and may become a concern before this is all over.

I truly understand the needs of those who don’t have the resources to fully take care of themselves. I grew up poor back in the ’50s and ’60s when surplus foods were distributed to needy citizens, not food stamps, cards or whatever the vehicle used today. I get it.

What I don’t understand is that when I watch news clips about food banks, I see a wealth of items, from canned goods to produce, that I cannot get in my local store. They just don’t have it. Why is this happening? It would seem to me that if a person with the resources to take care of himself or herself can’t get the most basic necessities, why are they being offered to those who can’t?

No, I don’t think those in need should be deprived, but don’t we all have a need?
