Letter to the editor: We should commend, not criticize, our teachers

Tribune-Review

I want to commend all teachers who have stepped up and adjusted their curriculum to provide their students with the best possible education during this pandemic.

To members of the community who think teachers are working less and to disgruntled school board directors, please walk in their shoes. Teachers and administrators had two weeks in March to scramble to put together virtual classes. Teachers and administrators worked many hours during the summer learning new technology for virtual learning and covid-19 guidelines. Teachers help students adjust to covid-19 restrictions, meet daily challenges and worry about everyone’s health.

Covid-19 has been financially difficult on many districts, but the budget cuts were deep in the Greensburg Salem School District. In a July 2 letter to parents and the community regarding budget cuts, Superintendent Gary Peiffer assured teachers and parents that the school board directors had children or grandchildren in the district and they did not take the budget cuts lightly. Yet some school board directors criticized the teachers and administrators on social media and at a public meeting.

If these directors are dedicated to the district, why so critical? Where is the support?
