If you, like me, are worried about corruption and financial mismanagement, electing people with technical competence to the county’s financial offices is critical. This is why I support Darwin Leuba for Allegheny County controller and Erica Brusselars for county treasurer.
A good auditor has to be a details nerd; Leuba has both a computer science degree and experience serving as auditor for O’Hara Township for more than five years. His remarkable work exposing untaxed UPMC corporate parking lots, which Mayor Ed Gainey has vowed to follow up on, is a powerful demonstration of what he would be able to do for us given the resources of the controller’s office.
For treasurer, Brusselars has both a mathematics degree and an actuarial background that will be critical to addressing our underfunded pension fund. Both Leuba and Brusselars are running against longtime politicians who have experience as city councilors. As important as that work may be, budget holes are not potholes.
The work of the controller’s and treasurer’s offices is highly technical and numbers- based. We need to elect the Democrats with auditing and actuarial experience to effectively manage the offices.
