Letter to the editor: Understanding the workings of Washington

Tribune-Review

Our government is founded on the principles of checks and balances. The legislative branch creates the laws. The executive branch executes those laws. And the judicial branch interprets and clarifies those laws. And our media spotlights when proper execution of these functions is not occurring.

If you have not read the Constitution recently, please do so. It is a very quick read. It is important to understand how our government was designed to run, to understand the longevity of our government (third oldest) and the current ideology opposing it.

Always there is the reality of the implementation of a concept. This, I feel, is why our government is now struggling. In the 2020 election, President Biden received 92% of the vote in D.C. An even greater disparity than San Francisco! This is the population that is charged with the day-to-day functioning of our government.

In recent years, anonymous sources are constantly cited for leaked information from D.C. Confrontation of opposing ideas is often how the best solution to an issue is developed. Yet leaked information framed in a particular manner is used to “gum up” the proper functioning of our branches of government.

We will not plug all the leaks in D.C. But if we understand the information that we receive within the context of D.C. and media bias, this aids in the interpretation of situations like the leak now coming from SCOTUS.
