Letter to the editor: Trump enablers unfit to serve country

Tribune-Review

To Rep. Guy Reschenthaler:

I hope you were happy watching the events transpiring in Washington Jan. 6. I hope you are proud of the uncivilized behavior displayed by President Trump and his supporters. While I hold Trump responsible for the deplorable actions of his supporters, responsibility falls equally on the heads of congressional Republicans, including yourself, for being Trump’s enablers these past four years.

Your spineless, abject refusal to be “the adults in the room” and set limits on Trump’s boorish, childish behavior and inflammatory, divisive rhetoric served to embolden Trump and his supporters to increasing levels of disdain for the norms of behavior we observe in this country. This disdain culminated in the attempted insurrection. The timidity displayed by congressional Republicans in declining to assume the role of parent and rein in Trump’s temper tantrums is, in my eyes, a gross dereliction of duty on your part.

It is my belief every one of you congressional Republicans who lacked the gumption to stand up to Trump, especially those members who embraced the plethora of baseless, unsupported allegations of vote fraud thrown out by Trump, are unfit to serve this country.

By your behavior, you, sir, you have lost my vote, and I don’t see any way of your being able to win it back. Come 2022, I will refuse to reward the Republican Party for their bad behavior during this election year.
