Letter to the editor: Trump and Christianity
The writer of the letter ”Christians don’t vote for Trump” (July 30, TribLive) invoked Christianity as a weapon to demonize President Trump. His letter, filled with hate and anger, belies his devotion to Christianity.
As a devout, practicing Catholic, I believe a Christian must believe everything Jesus taught, without exception. I do not write in judgment of the writer, but to offer an opposing point of view.
Jesus spoke against anger and hatred (Matthew 5:22 and 7:1, 2). Scripture further tells us that one does not have to physically take a life to violate the Fifth Commandment, thou shalt not kill.
The writer speaks with authority about Trump concerning subjects with which he could not possibly have personal knowledge. His vilification of Trump directly misinforms those who just don’t have creditable knowledge of the truth, the Trump-hating community. Two of the most prominent figures in Holy Scripture were St. Paul and David, and each were among its greatest sinners. It’s God who chooses, oftentimes, in man’s limited capacity to comprehend.
Finally, his claim that Christians don’t vote for Trump could not be more wrong! Christians cannot vote for any Democrat for a variety of reasons: their stance on abortion, their war against family values (as in gay marriages and transgender policies) and the removal of God from all aspects of our lives.
Trump publicly proclaimed that all life is a precious gift from God. Quite Christian from my viewpoint!
