Letter to the editor: Shaffer misleads voters
The political landscape in our country seems to change by the minute. But, in the North Hills, one factor has remained the same for years: Republican extremist Jeremy Shaffer running unsuccessfully for another office. After trying (and failing) to get elected and spending nearly $1.7 million of his fortune to do so, Shaffer is yet again putting his name on the ballot, this time for state House.
More consistent than Shaffer running for office is the missing integrity that accompanies his campaigns. From trying to mislead voters about his position on abortion (he is on the record supporting a nationwide abortion ban without any exceptions), to claiming he has support from Democrats (without any proof), to blatantly copying his opponent’s tagline in a recent mailer (Bill Petulla’s tagline has been “People Over Politics” since he launched his campaign), Shaffer’s questionable ethics on the campaign trail have been extreme.
This is not the first campaign where Shaffer has been caught misleading voters. In his failed 2018 run for the state Senate, Shaffer, or someone affiliated with his campaign, printed blatantly misleading yard signs copying his opponent’s logo design and changing her Democratic Party affiliation to “Socialist” on the signs.
Like his idol (Shaffer openly sought former President Trump’s endorsement and failed to earn it in his unsuccessful bid for Congress in 2022), Shaffer seems to struggle with the truth. In an era increasingly marred by conspiracy theories, political violence and lies, it’s time to turn the page. Voters deserve so much better.
