Letter to the editor: Senior housing in East Vandergrift

Tribune-Review

East Vandergrift has benefited from Community Development Block Grants throughout the years. The continuous support of the Westmoreland County commissioners and the county Planning and Development office has contributed greatly to community development upgrades, including the stormwater-sewage separation project and repaving of borough streets.

Now, borough officials are working with the Westmoreland County Redevelopment Authority/Land Bank, county Planning and Development office and Homes Build Hope Inc. to secure financial tax credits for a quality senior housing project (“Senior lofts in former elementary school coming to East Vandergrift.”)

As the application process moves forward through the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, borough officials remain optimistic and appreciate the support of state Sen. Jim Brewster, Rep. Jason Silvis and the county commissioners.

Morning Sun Senior Lofts will preserve and repurpose the former East Vandergrift Elementary School, which is a landmark building and will provide much-needed programs and services for senior citizens.

Housing development company MVAH Partners plans to rehabilitate and transform the former school into approximately 42 single and/or double occupancy apartments for individuals 62 and older who meet eligible income criteria and guidelines.

Westmoreland County has a need for affordable, quality senior citizen housing, and the Morning Sun Senior Lofts project will help fulfill that need in our small community.
