Letter to the editor: Selfish people threaten us all

I feel sad that there are people like letter-­writer Cindy Wallace (“Losing our freedoms,” March 3, TribLIVE), who are unwilling to endure even the most minor inconvenience of masks and vaccinations while other people are dying of covid.

Wallace says “only God can control the pandemic.” God controls pandemics by giving some of us the brains to vaccinate ourselves. Have you heard “God helps those who help themselves”?

Wallace thinks her “rights” are being taken. She lost the right to go out with a gun and shoot people a long time ago. What’s the difference? Does she complain about that?

We are trying to survive this public emergency, and we need to listen to the experts. Cindy, are you a doctor? Is there any reason I should believe you have the slightest idea what you are talking about? Do you reject all science, or just pertaining to covid? I’ll bet if you had cancer you would rely on doctors, not God.

Selfish people who reject the experts are threatening the rest of us. The human race will survive covid. Climate change might well be another matter. The same people deny it’s happening, or say “only God can change the climate.” The experts say we have already changed it, and if we don’t reverse course the Earth will be uninhabitable. I’ll trust the experts, not selfish and ignorant people who simply don’t want to cooperate.

I plan to wear a mask in public for the rest of my life. Since the pandemic began, I haven’t even gotten a common cold. Masks and vaccinations work!
