Letter to the editor: School taxes unfair to the elderly, childless

Tribune-Review

Dear Greater Latrobe School Board: How dare you ask for a tax increase, especially from those of us without children (“Greater Latrobe OKs 1 mill tax hike, hears more concerns about future of foreign languages” (June 16, TribLIVE)?

Most elderly and childless folks received nothing in incentives this year while folks with children raked in money and incentives left and right.

You stated that insurance costs were up. Guess what? So were our expenses. And why are we one of the few districts asking for an increase? How can we have so many expenses when school barely took place this past year?

I will be very clear about what I saw: Free school food while Uber Eats came to homes multiple times a day; 16-year-olds getting cars after stimulus money arrived; and families vacationing every weekend because students can learn remotely. And now you want the rest of us to pick up the slack.

Every year when taxes are due, I cringe at the portion I give you. Children are all about choices, and along with that comes expenses. Now buck up and pay.
