Letter to the editor: School tax & retirement
I believe in total elimination of school tax. No property owners should lose their homes because of it! Op-ed writer Gary English (“Tax -shifting schemes won’t provide property tax relief,” Feb. 18, TribLIVE) doesn’t agree.
The proposed House/Senate Bill 76 on school tax elimination would provide much more than a shift. Adding additional income (1.88%) and sales (1%) taxes while expanding the base of goods/services to be taxed would provide the funds. Simple math can show the savings to be had while eliminating the school tax.
English is a member of the Franklin Regional School Board. Boards, unions and representatives want nothing to change the current flow of easy money. He also had the gall in his op-ed to mention shoppers from Ohio, New York and Canada traveling to the Grove City outlets to purchase goods at 0% tax. Really?
HB/SB 76 provides not only the fairest, most efficient replacement/upgrade to the current system of funding but also guarantees that all Pennsylvanians and transients share in the cost of funding education.
Please visit the Pennsylvania Taxpayers Cyber Coaltion website, ptcc.us, for information on the bill and then contact your representatives and ask them to support it. This bill does not tax retirement!
