I would like to address two recent letters to the editor: “Saturday deer opener takes fun out of hunting” (March 24, TribLIVE) and “Saturday deer opener works fine” (March 25, TribLIVE). I agree with the writer of the second letter, that we had to accept antler restrictions. None of my colleagues or hunting peers have a problem with that. It has, as the Pennsylvania Game Commission intended, resulted in a healthy buck herd. I have heard no complaints about Sunday hunting. I can go to church in the morning and hit the fields afterward.
The Saturday opener has diminished the quality of my family’s Thanksgiving weekend. Black Friday shopping with the wife is rushed. Small Business Saturday is no longer an option. The grandchildren still have Monday off as part of the holiday break. If more hunting time is needed, open up the Sunday between, and the Sunday after, for more weekend time.
I do not even have to address the financial impact here. It is obvious.
The game commission is 100 years old. I am certain that the tradition of the Monday opener will not be replaced if I hunt for another 35 years until my 100th birthday.
