Concerning the safety of firefighters and residents in the Alle-Kiski region: Things need to change with house owners and landlords. Every furnace should be inspected every two years for carbon monoxide leaks and proper maintenance and safety. If we make this a law, our local code enforcement officers can regulate this, working with the homeowners and landlords. If they don’t comply with the safety guidelines, there should be warnings and fines .
Educate the public on having carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in homes; fire extinguishers should be strongly suggested for every household. Just a few of these safety tips will save lives and help protect our firefighters from unnecessary harm, for they also have families that depend on them.
Suggestions should be turned into laws to protect the public. I am sure these subjects have been brought up at council meetings before; we need to keep them in the public eye and reeducate people on fire safety, especially in our schools and day cares.
