Letter to the editor: Rep. Eric Nelson a pro-life advocate

Tribune-Review

John Ventre’s letter “Questioning Westmoreland County Republicans” (May 25, TribLIVE) claimed state Rep. Eric Nelson “voted for fetal tissue research.” This is 100% inaccurate.

This issue is very near and dear to my heart. As a Life PAC of Southwestern Pennsylvania board member and an active pro-life volunteer for years, I speak with Nelson about pro-life issues. In 2022, he voted for legislation that would have required the four state-related universities to attest they would not conduct fetal tissue research if they also accept state-related education funding.

Nelson also voted against the University of Pittsburgh’s annual funding in Senate Bill 1284 and instead introduced the PA College Voucher program, which would send state dollars directly to students through grants.

Americans for Prosperity (AFP) ranks him tied for third highest-rated House member on its PA Taxpayer Scorecard for his voting record on issues relating to government spending, economic growth and protecting individual freedom. AFP publishes a Legislative Scorecard annually on how state senators and representatives are voting.

Nelson is a staunch pro-life advocate and a proven conservative, despite Ventre’s false claims in this letter.
