Letter to the editor: Recognizing social workers
March is National Social Work Month. As a senior at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Social Work, I have the honor of working with extraordinary individuals who have accepted the call to become change-makers and advocates for the vulnerable and oppressed. While case management will always be a vital responsibility, there are many other ways social workers seek to improve our society for the better.
My professors instill a sense of urgency into each student to witness and maintain the dignity and worth of all who cross our paths. They challenge us to recognize the barriers to equality and to advocate on behalf of those who face those barriers. It is these dedicated and passionate professionals that we look to emulate as we set out into the field after graduation in April.
Some of us may seek to ensure the safety and well-being of children, while some may devote their careers to criminal reform. Others may walk beside those who have experienced trauma or illness, providing them with the tools necessary to live more fulfilling and empowered lives. Some may dedicate their lives to confronting the opioid crisis and helping those who have been tragically affected, especially in our region. And others may find themselves in community development, working to ensure affordable housing to those in need.
No matter where our paths take us, we will be sure to answer the call while always maintaining the dignity and worth of all, as our profession expects.
