Letter to the editor: Rebuilding our nation's soul

Tribune-Review

I was impressed by Leonard Pitts Jr.’s column “Small wonder the church is shrinking” (April 6, TribLIVE). He stated that for the first time since Gallup has been tracking religious membership in America since 1937, it has dropped below half. In 1937, 73% of us belonged to a house of worship, but today it’s 47%.

It got me thinking about why this has happened. Tragic events are covered in the media every day. Personal problems threaten to overpower us. Fear and anxiety cloud our thinking. We are in a culture of chaos. Where do we turn?

Pitts says faith can shape politics. Yes, but when politics starts shaping faith, maybe you’ve lost your way.

We are “one nation under God, indivisible.” It means just that, and every time we pledge allegiance to our flag but don’t respond faithfully, we are lost.

We need to reconnect with God and follow his laws. Perhaps then we won’t need gun law reform and won’t need to live in fear of our fellow man or the future. We won’t have to be so divided and will rebuild the soul of our nation.
