Letter to the editor: Project SEED still feeding hungry kids
Our lives have changed dramatically this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. One thing that hasn’t changed is the prevalence of food insecurity in so many homes.
As covid-19 continues to cause shutdowns of so many aspects of our lives, rest assured that Project SEED remains committed to providing a backpack of weekend food to students in need in the Alle-Kiski Valley so that they have Something to Eat Every Day (SEED).
Like everyone else, we have had our challenges. Besides schools opening and closing several times since this school year began, government guidelines closed the senior citizen center that was our home base, and our fundraising progress meter at Richard Perriello’s accounting office blew down several weeks ago.
With every challenge we faced, we became more determined to persevere. We know the kids are counting on us. Our dedicated volunteers are on standby to pack food any week the schools are open. The New Kensington Salvation Army graciously offered us space so that we have a place to continue our work. #1 Signs in New Kensington is repairing our progress meter. And donations are coming in.
Since its inception in 2013, Project SEED has provided over 66,000 bags of food at a cost of over $221,000.
Visit somethingtoeateveryday.org to learn more. Tax-deductible contributions can be sent to Project SEED, 1039 Third Ave., New Kensington, PA 15068.
Merry Christmas, and let’s all hope for a healthy and happy new year!
