Letter to the editor: Prevention, awareness key for Lyme disease

Tribune-Review

Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria. The bite of a black-legged tick or deer tick transmits the disease. It causes flu-like symptoms and a rash. If left untreated, the infection can cause swelling and pain in your joints. It can cause problems with your heart and nervous system. A simple blood test can show if you have Lyme disease.

The good news is there are ways to protect yourself and your pets. Check for ticks after spending time outdoors. In grassy or wooded areas, wear light-colored protective clothing. Cover up as much of your skin as possible. Use a bug repellent. If you discover a tick biting your skin, remove it immediately by getting close to the skin and pulling it straight up.

Deer ticks are present in 67 counties in Pennsylvania. Each year, there are more than 10,000 cases of Lyme disease reported. If you become ill after a tick bite, see a health care provider. There are free resources available for Pennsylvania residents. Tick Lab Prevention of Pennsylvania offers free tick testing labs. The Pennsylvania Department of Health offers programs to the community to prevent Lyme disease.

Improving awareness and prevention measures will decrease the risk of Lyme disease.
