Letter to the editor: Please help others this season
I experienced a disheartening sight around 5 p.m. Nov. 8 in Youngwood. A woman of advanced years was pushing a shopping cart full of groceries on busy North Third Street near Sheetz while the traffic was whipping by her. She was walking on the street, and she was trying to cross over. I pulled over and by the time I parked my car, she had crossed the street and was heading toward an alley behind Sheetz.
She pushed that heavy cart from Shop ‘n Save almost a mile to her home behind Sheetz. I caught up to her in the Sheetz parking lot and told her I would like to help her, and she asked me what I could do. I said I could push her cart the remaining way to her house, but she said her house was close by. When I said she could have been hit by a car, her response was, “The good Lord always takes care of me.”
What has happened to our society that we have blinders on and don’t care about the safety of another human being? She had walked close to a mile, and no one stopped to offer her any assistance. You may ask why she walking on the street instead of the sidewalk. Some parts of the sidewalks are in disrepair, so it’s not smooth sailing to push a cart full of groceries.
‘Tis the Season of goodwill. Please perform a random act of kindness that could change a person’s life for the better.
