Letter to the editor: Man has little power to change climate

In the letter “Denial won’t stop climate change destruction” (Aug. 8, TribLIVE) responding to my letter “Climate change hysteria destroying economy” (July 25, TribLIVE), the writer outlined evidence of climate change. I don’t disagree that weather patterns are changing. I do believe, and historical data shows, that this is a naturally occurring phenomenon. I suggest he study past weather patterns (i.e., ice ages, the Dust Bowl, hurricane seasons, etc.).

The climate hysteria cult blames every weather pattern change on human activity. I disagree. This planet, and our entire solar system, are constantly evolving without any human input. In the early 1900s, nobody built along the East Coast because of the frequency of hurricanes; there was a decades-long lull. Now we’re experiencing a repeat of the normal cycle.

Volcanic activity and many other events completely out of our control can dramatically affect climate change. I only suggested that we’re better served focusing on the things we can control (i.e., polluting the oceans and internal waterways, deforestation of the rainforest, etc.) and not be fooled into believing destroying our economy and lowering our standard of living will impact weather patterns.

With the exception of all-out nuclear war, mankind has little power to change the earth’s climate.
