Letter to the editor: Make a nonmaterial difference this Christmas

Recently, we have heard how the global supply chain is disrupted. This has resulted in an unprecedented backlog of goods in transit. Dire warnings of empty shelves have prompted panic buying, especially with Christmas less than two months away. “Get those gifts now to avoid a blue Christmas” has become a familiar refrain.

Having raised three kids, I certainly understand a parent’s desire to make Christmas special. But, for the rest of us, maybe we should use this current “crisis” as an opportunity. In a time when Christmas has become far too materially focused, why not instead focus on the true meaning of Christmas? Why not do something for your neighbors, some of whom really need it coming out of this pandemic?

Charitable organizations are always looking for volunteers and financial donations. Use the time that you were going to spend shopping by volunteering instead. Take the money that you were going to spend on those gifts stuck offshore and give it to a charity of your choice. While you may not have that new phone or trendy coat, you will feel an overwhelming sense of joy and compassion for your fellow man, which is a priceless gift.
