Letter to the editor: Legislators should do their jobs
I am beginning to resent our Pennsylvania legislators relying on the courts to have the final say on issues they have legislated. This is also true with recent movements to amend the state Constitution by sending referendums to voters. Whether it is creating new legislative districts or changing the way Pennsylvanians vote, the bottom line is our Pennsylvania legislators seem to be letting others do their job.
The latest kick in the pants is Commonwealth Court has now ruled that Act 77 of 2019, the no- excuse mail-in voting, is unconstitutional. What were our legislators thinking when both Republicans and Democrats passed this bill into law? Don’t they understand the state Constitution?
Now everyone in Pennsylvania believes our state House should be reduced from 203 to 150 members, saving millions of dollars each year. The referendum process requires two legislative sessions voting approval before sending it to voters for the final vote. Yet several years ago, the leadership decided not to vote in the second year, derailing the referendum.
Apparently, it’s OK for members of the most expensive state Legislature to not do too much and just rely on the courts and the people to do their job for them.
