Letter to the editor: Learn, take action on anti-Asian racism

Tribune-Review

Given the rise over the past year in anti-Asian racism and racial incidents, here are just a few resources for learning and action.

If you experience bullying, intimidation or violence related to being Asian and/or Pacific Islander (API), go to stopaapihate.org and standagainsthatred.org/ report to report the incident so that there is better data to understand the extent of the problem.

If you are not sure what to do when you experience or witness harassment or hate, get free training on Bystander Intervention to stop anti-Asian American and xenophobic harassment: advancingjustice-aajc.org/events.

If you have not yet learned about the 200-year-long history of API in the U.S., start with author Erika Lee speaking at the U.S. National Archives on her book “The Making of Asian America: A History” (presentation begins at mm:ss 4:50). Next, read Gillian Brockell’s March 18 Washington Post article “The long, ugly history of anti-Asian racism and violence in the U.S.”

If you think that Asians are a “model minority,” read Sarah-SoonLing Blackburn’s March 21, 2019, piece “What Is the Model Minority Myth?” at learningfor justice.org.

Thank you for taking action.
