Letter to the editor: Keep the peace and free speech
Most people do a few silly things they regret. Submitting a letter to the editor, “Looking at logic on Trump” (Nov. 21, TribLIVE), was one such. The point of the letter was to encourage people to consider the actions of a president on merit rather than party platform. Since the letter appeared, I’ve been getting crank phone calls.
The first was a simple hang-up call; the next was a female voice saying “we’re still trying to locate Douglas.” I asked her what number she was calling, and she hung up. Another day I got what sounded like a digital robo-call saying the price of electricity would be going way up, and that I should press 1 to speak to a representative about getting a 40% discount. I pressed 1 and a person came on the line. There was noise in the background typical of a call center (nice touch) and a female voice mumbled a few things. I asked if this was a representative, and she said, “No. (Expletive) you, you piece of (expletive).”
As said in the letter, I don’t support Trump. Women are understandably furious about the reversal of Roe v. Wade. I am pro-choice. The letter was written in response to what appears to be a breakdown in reason and ethics.
Free speech has been quite a bummer since the 2016 election. Crank phone calls, though. Harassment. Intimidation. It’s deplorable, criminal behavior. Please direct agendas to politicians, and respect civil rights. Opinions differ. Seek common ground. Keep the peace.
