Letter to the editor: Justice for Ray Allen Shetler
I consider the acquittal of Ray Allen Shetler Jr. in the shooting death of St. Clair Township police Officer Lloyd Reed back in 2015 to be an aberration of justice. A reasonable person involved in a justifiable shooting would notify first responders, put their gun away, wait for law enforcement to come and then walk them through the scenario of what happened. Shetler did the antithesis of that.
Fast-forward five years, and we see Shetler fleeing apprehension and resisting law enforcement (“New Florence man granted bail on police assault charges, detained on prior case,” Oct. 14, TribLIVE). Here reasonable people would view Shetler as a hazard to community safety.
I commend Judge Megan Bilik-Defazio for ruling on the obvious … where justice is usually found.
