Letter to the editor: Infrastructure bills must be approved quickly
Residents of Westmoreland County deserve swift approval of the infrastructure bills.
Build Back Better will provide good-paying union jobs to spur our local economies, benefit small business owners and increase local tax revenues. The Senate has a $1.2 trillion bipartisan deal that will invest in roads, bridges, transit and broadband. We need to encourage our senators to vote in favor of this deal, as that is the wish of the vast majority of their constituents.
In addition, the bills will provide $3.5 trillion for services for children and the elderly. In-home eldercare will save substantial dollars versus nursing home care. Investments in children’s programs will serve to improve their futures and the future of our communities. This should be approved through the reconciliation process.
Over recent years, 99% of Americans were overlooked; only the wealthiest 1% were treated to income tax benefits that allowed them to pay less in taxes than a low-income clerk. It is time to tax the very rich as well as corporations. Anything less is an abuse of 99% of Americans. The additional tax revenue will pay for the infrastructure costs.
We need our leaders in Washington to return to a fair tax structure.
