Letter to the editor: Higher ed's woke nonsense
Penn State sociology professor Sam Richards might be as dumb as the average tree stump. More likely, he’s just another academic who knows that spouting “woke” nonsense converts into currency in the world of higher education.
In a video that’s gone viral, Richards tells his class that in the job marketplace, whites have an advantage over Blacks because of their skin. This is empirically false.
For example, Penn State’s affirmative action hiring directives require that in the case of a virtual tie, the “diversity needs” of the campus must be the deciding factor in hiring decisions. I would stake my Ph.D. that this does not mean on a campus where 80% of the faculty are Black females that a white guy in a virtual tie with a Black woman would get the job on the basis that his white skin and testes would contribute to the “diversity needs” of the campus.
I feel bad for Black students at Penn State who are patronized and white students who are made to feel guilty because of their skin. It’s racist. I would not infringe on free speech, but those who stoke the fires of racial division are a menace and need to be called out.
