Letter to the editor: Help the bullied by teaching children well
I was moved by Lori Falce’s column “What I needed when I was bullied” (May 6, TribLIVE). She needed adults to step in and stop the bullies. Is it that adults don’t know how to stop them? (Kids just have a pecking order.) Or did the adults think that some kids that are different deserve to be bullied?
Years ago, while riding in the car with my dad, I saw a man walking along the road and I said, “Boy, is he ugly.” My dad said, “Well, everyone can’t be cute like you.” That really knocked me down a few pegs.
Kids have different personalities. You can’t treat them all the same. The aggressive, dominant children need to be taught humility and compassion, and the shy, timid children need to be taught confidence and compassion. Does anyone remember Mimi from “The Drew Carey Show”? She was a fat person with attitude. I absolutely loved and admired her.
