Letter to the editor: Government should be downsized
In response to George O. Curry’s letter “Trump won’t make America great again” (July 12, TribLIVE). Mr. Curry, the real joke is that somebody wants to pin the rampant inflation our people are experiencing on President Donald Trump. President Joe Biden, through executive order, restricted nearly every aspect of the oil industry. Result: a 50% increase in gasoline and diesel from the day he took office to a week before the Ukraine invasion and the 9.1% inflation over the past year!
You say taxes need to be raised. For $1.9 trillion in the American Rescue Plan (not one Republican vote)? Student loan forgiveness? Mr. Curry, who promises everything for nothing? Big Government socialists do.
You say: “A lot of companies pay hardly any taxes” and “Most of the rich don’t pay much in taxes now.” Wow, wonderful research! Who pays for that $4 trillion budget? That’s $12 million per capita.
I’ve processed quarterly tax payments; the multitude of five- and six-digit payments that come through is shocking.
Mismanagement — that’s why there is a deficit. Mayors celebrating “sanctuary” city status; endorsement of “the future of the liberal world order” — that’s why there is a deficit.
Stop spewing media propaganda and do some research. The 11-point plan to downsize the federal government does not cut Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid. It does require them to be “financially solvent” — oh, wait, that would be the opposite of mismanagement. That would be … responsible!
I welcome downsizing the government.
Our current choices: Big Government socialism or free market capitalism!
