Letter to the editor: God didn’t give us guns

I’m not opposed to gun ownership, but like an overwhelming majority of Americans I support commonsense gun legislation. Neither the Christian Bible nor the U.S. Constitution forbids reasonable limits on gun ownership.

Based on this, I am intrigued by politicians and recent letter-writers who proclaim that unbridled gun ownership is a “God-given right.” Because these are most likely the same individuals who wear their Christianity on their sleeve, I assume they are associating “God” with the teachings of “the Prince of Peace,” Jesus Christ. I’m no biblical scholar, but I am aware of the commandment “Thou Shall not Kill” (see abortion legislation), and guns are made for killing. I also recall that the Christian Bible speaks more to the responsibilities of Christians and less to their so-called “rights.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place, for all who take the sword will die by the sword.” — Matthew 26:52-53

Admittedly, I am less familiar with the distorted teachings of the “American savior,” the guy with the red MAGA hat, blonde hair, blue eyes, and his misguided and self serving followers. Perhaps he is the purveyor of their “God-given rights.”
