Letter to the editor: Gloom and doom
We are at the mercy of our politicians. All of our problems started with giving the rich and companies tax breaks. They gave tax incentives for our companies to go overseas. We had the fear of Donald J. Trump. Now we have the fear of the new Congress. They want spending cuts. I predict they will use our national debt as a bargaining chip. Big spending bills and politicians acting like Santa Claus need to be over.
Forget about lower interest rates. Nobody wants to do anything for the national debt. Spending cuts are necessary because the tax revenues are not enough.
Companies and rich people used to pay their fair share of taxes. A 20% consumption tax would be a good start to paying down our debts. But until politicians figure that out, all states will have to have a gas tax to pay for roads, bridges and other things. Property tax will go, with pay cuts for teachers.
Gloom and doom days are ahead. As politicians fight for power instead of working together, the grand experiment appears to be ending. What will Mother Nature do to us?
