Letter to the editor: Global pandemic requires global response

Tribune-Review

While I am extremely grateful that President Trump recovered from covid-19 in October, not everyone has had the opportunity to access care to fight this virus. Our leaders tried to come to an agreement on domestic financial aid for the effects of the pandemic and should keep trying. It’s threatening communities facing poverty all around the world.

According to a recent ONE Campaign poll, “Nearly all voters (87%) say working to stop the global spread of covid-19 should be a priority for the U.S. And, nearly all voters say it is important for the U.S. to lead the world in responding (85%), preventing (86%) and detecting (85%) global infectious diseases.”

I call on my senators, Bob Casey and Pat Toomey, to revive a new HEROES Act that also includes a global response to strengthen health care systems through Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Global Fund and PEPFAR in low-resource countries, as well as address hunger and malnutrition. This is what the American people are calling for.

This is a global pandemic, and it requires a global response.
