Letter to the editor: Funding in Franklin Regional
Here is the situation created by current Franklin Regional School Board:
In the last three years, school taxes increased the maximum amount allowed by the state.
Already approved increases in future salaries, pensions and health care will keep taxes increasing at the maximum.
To fund the Sloan project, the school board will use almost all funds set aside for other future needs, virtually eliminating improvements and repairs for the middle and high schools.
Even these funds will run out in 2022, consuming most of Franklin Regional debt service reserve.
In 2021-22, Franklin Regional must raise an additional $2.5 million (7.2 mils) to make bond payments, much more than the Pennsylvania index maximum. We will not be able to fund our schools and stay under the state maximum without serious cuts to programs.
