Letter to the editor: Essential workers, not football players, are heroes

Tribune-Review

Let’s praise, salute and give many thanks to everyone who has to work outdoors and bear the bitter sub-zero-degree temperatures, especially over the last week. The workers for the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County, Columbia Gas, Allegheny Power, the mail carrier, the person picking up my trash for a living … you all are true heroes. Thank you for what you do!

You are the truly skilled, talented and intelligent people who should be praised and glorified and, most importantly, be paid more for the vital work you do for all of us. Yet sadly and embarrassingly, it’s the football players and coaches who are glorified and looked at as “deities” by most of society. What they do on a Sunday afternoon on the football field is not hard work under any circumstances (whether it’s 85 degrees or -20 degrees). Football is not even close to being “work.” Anyone who participates should be ashamed and embarrassed.
