Letter to the editor: Dollar stores and the Green New Deal

Our plethora of dollar stores have improved everyone’s life so much I can’t withhold gratitude. I have purchased skin care products that reduced acne. Serious medical problems too personal to go into have been treated successfully with dollar store frankincense and myrrh. Poison ivy. ’Roids. Bicycle injuries. All treated with stuff they sell at a buck a pop. There are moments when dollar stores remind me of Florence Nightingale.

I’ve been swallowing their store-brand aspirin for ages. It’s too late to ask economist Milton Friedman exactly how the work of saints was achieved, but diverse mavericks, all pronouns included, might say that this is the result of a rigorously competitive global free market. And here people are worried about the job situation. So they say, a lot of jobs are created by way of private business and industry.

The Green New Deal appears to be forming in the minds of our leadership rather like a dessert mold in a Bundt pan. Friedman was partial to unregulated free markets. There is no such thing, at this time, as an unregulated free market, but he said the less the government is involved in business, the better.

I am afraid that under present leadership, the Green New Deal will be inflationary and exclusionary, as best serves the leadership. It may be corporate fascism. There may be a crisis in competence. The Fed isn’t wrapped too tight.
