Letter to the editor: Despite media's messages, U.S. is doing well
I don’t understand why the television media keep creating problems that don’t exist. Is it because they want to divide us or is there some other reason?
One problem is racism. Many of us grew up when there was actual racism, but our country is doing very well now. We elected a black president, for Pete’s sake, and now it’s totally acceptable for blacks and whites to marry. If someone is being mean to you, it may have nothing to do with your skin color; it may just be that you’re acting like a jackass.
Another problem the television media are pushing is that burning fossil fuels causes climate change. I’m not going to debate whether that is true or not; I’m just saying I don’t know what they expect us to do about it. Many of us grew up with pollution. There was black smoke coming out of every chimney. The steel mills had smoke coming out of their stacks in various colors. Car exhausts didn’t have pollution controls. The air is very clean now. Our country is doing well.
Still another problem they’re pushing is income inequality. Back in the 1950s, they really did pay women less than men for doing the same job. U.S. Steel got sued, and my mother got $1,000 in back pay. I believe there are laws now against gender discrimination. Our country has evolved and is doing very well.
So the next time the television media is pointing out a problem, look around and judge for yourself if it’s real.
