Letter to the editor: Democrats will uphold free, fair elections
I saw Liz Cheney’s full interview on “Meet the Press” Oct. 23. It was more than just a clear chat. She said that every American has an obligation and a responsibility to make an informed vote in the midterms and understand the facts. And if someone they are considering voting for denied the results of the last election (such as Sen. Doug Mastriano), they should not vote for that candidate. To do so would not be a cavalier opinion, or a belief, or even a snub to “liberals”; it would be an irresponsible decision that endangers our constitutional values of freedom.
Rep. Guy Reschenthaler of Westmoreland County is an election denier, one of 147 members of Congress to deny President Joe Biden’s certification and attempt to block the peaceful transfer on Jan. 6, 2021.
The most chilling thing Cheney said was that she grew up thinking most people are basically good and do the right thing, but now she’s not so sure. Republicans want to talk about crime. Donald Trump and the domestic terrorism he provokes/provoked are crimes.
Lt. Gov. John Fetterman has a broader approach to the topic, and I hope he turns the tables on the argument.
There is no more important issue than a free and fair election, upholding this wonderfully successful democracy. I will vote for Josh Shapiro and Fetterman, and Democrats, because they will uphold it, while no Republican can will promise that it’s safe in their hands.
